Day 1 – Introductory 1 Hour Session

(must be completed at least 2 days prior to attending the workshop day)

Participants are required to attend a 1 hour brief introduction to the workshop which will include completing a questionnaire that will be scored prior to their attendance on Day 2. This session may be undertaken via Skype or similar.

Day 2 – Full Day Workshop

• Introduction to the program and background on the MBTI
• Developing a clear understanding of your true personality type

Morning Tea Break

• Learning about what works (dominant function) and what drives you crazy (inferior function)
• Understanding group dynamics through the use of the MBTI Type Table

Under current legislation PCBU’s have an obligation to manage risks to the health & safety of its workers including those related to musculoskeletal disorders associated with hazardous manual tasks.

The PCBU must also ensure that information, training & instruction provided to a worker is suitable & has regard for the nature of the work being carried out, the nature of the risks associated & control measures implemented.

Incorporating the new Code of Practice for Hazardous Manual Tasks this course is designed to prevent manual handling injuries through hazard & risk identification, risk assessment & primary control through job and task design. It will increase awareness & provide an understanding of the complex nature of manual handling activities & teach safe manual handling techniques.

IOH also provide customised manual handling training, which has proven to be highly effective in maximising worker understanding of the risks  of their actual work tasks and the procedures that will minimise the risk of injury.

The difference between IOH manual handling training and others is that your session is customised and practical and is delivered by an experienced Physiotherapist, Occupational Therapist or Exercise Physiologist. Our trainer will conduct an onsite visit to your workplace prior to delivering the training, to discuss your manual handling hazards and risks and to observe workers performing their usual manual handling tasks. Photos and video will be taken of manual handling tasks being performed. These will be incorporated into the session. From the observations made, incorrect techniques will be addressed with recommendations for improvements. An optional ‘unscheduled’ follow up observation visit is made by the trainer approximately 4 weeks after the training which encourages people to keep applying the newly learned techniques over a period of time. This assists in sustaining changed practices and preventing people falling straight back into their old habits. 

Many injuries could be avoided if correct manual handling techniques were used or tasks were modified to remove continuous repetition, poor posture or a prolonged static work position.

This training assists workers and managers in reducing the risk of injuries specifically related to exposure to hazardous manual tasks in the jobs they actually undertake.

IOH recommends up to 15 participants maximum per session due to practical activities. To enable quality training, grouping workers from the same workgroup who perform similar manual tasks per session is advised. Mixed groups can be accommodated however this is not the preferred arrangement.

This session aims to provide participants with the skills and knowledge to conduct an effective accident / incident investigation, and to be able to analyse the circumstances leading to the accident in order to be able to recommend the necessary action required to prevent a similar incident recurring in the workplace.

Legislation requires Persons Conducting a Business or Undertaking (PCBU) to identify, control and manage hazards. A legal requirement exists to monitor and review the control measures implemented to ensure effectiveness. When an incident occurs, it is a timely opportunity to investigate contributory factors that led to or caused the incident and to review and possibly change the current control measures to prevent future recurrence.

This 4½ hour course has been designed to provide an insight into incident investigation and outlines the need for investigation of incidents, current theories of the causes of incidents, hierarchy of controls and a practical investigation component.

This course is designed for elected HSRs under the WHS Act who have:

• already completed the HSR Initial 5 Day training

HSRs are entitled to attend one day’s refresher training each year (as provided for in the WHS Act Section 72), with the entitlement to the first refresher training commencing 1 year after the initial 5 day course. Participants will refresh their understanding of their roles, powers and functions in the representation, monitoring, investigation and enquiry into work health and safety management at their workplace under the WHS law. 

On successful completion of this course, participants will understand and be able to apply:

• WHS Act legislative framework
• Role and functions of the Regulator and their interactions with HSRs
• Duties and responsibilities of PCBUs, officers, workers and other parties under the legislation
• The nature of the consultation process with workers as required of the primary PCBU by the Act
• The purpose and formation of a work-group (or work-groups) within the workplace
• Election process for HSRs/Deputy HSRs and disqualification provisions
• Health and Safety Committees (HSCs)
• The entitlements, rights and protections of an elected HSR/Deputy HSR
• Using negotiation, communication and problem solving skills and strategies as a HSR to represent a work group and to resolve work health and safety issues
• Risk Management and the use of risk controls, including the duties and responsibilities of various PCBUs under legislation

Health and Safety Representative Refresher Public Course Dates

The Health and Safety Representative Initial – 5 Days course is designed for newly elected health and safety representatives (HSRs) and is delivered by SafeWork NSW Approved Training Providers (ATPs). This training will provide HSRs with an understanding of their roles, responsibilities and powers as outlined in legislation. The course includes both theory and practical activities including an on-site workplace inspection.

HSRs provide an effective way for the persons conducting a business or undertaking (PCBU) to meet their obligation to consult with workers on work health and safety matters.

An HSR is a valuable resource in promoting health and safety information to workers. They play an active role in assisting the PCBU to protect workers against risks. HSRs assist in developing a stronger commitment to safety from workers by involving them in decisions on how to manage risks and getting rapid resolution of health and safety issues.

The Work Health and Safety Act 2011 provides for the election of HSRs as the primary mechanism to represent workers on health and safety issues.

HSRs are entitled to choose and attend an approved five day training course in work health and safety. The PCBU must allow the HSR to attend within a 3 month period of the request for training and is responsible for payment of course fees.

Persons Conducting a Business or Undertaking (PCBU) at a workplace have obligations under the legislation in relation to hazardous chemicals. This obligation also applies to other persons such as importers and suppliers of hazardous chemicals. 

This course will give participants an understanding of the use, handling and storage of hazardous chemicals and mixtures. It also identifies how workers can be effectively involved in the process of hazardous chemicals management by identifying associated risks and minimising those risks as required by legislation. A practical risk assessment activity is incorporated in the training. Participants are encouraged to bring workplace documentation such as Safety Data Sheets and Chemical Risk Assessments for use during activities.

The Forklift Refresher training enables workers to keep up to date with changes in SafeWork NSW legislation and is delivered by experienced trainers. Operators may develop bad habits over the years resulting in possibly preventable injuries, high costs in compensation and insurance fees. This session reinforces to operators correct driving and working techniques to ensure safe work practices are followed in the workplace.

Forklift driving is classified as high risk work and therefore legislation requires forklift drivers to be assessed for competency and obtain a high risk work licence. This course is delivered by experienced trainers and assessed by SafeWork NSW approved assessors.

This is a 3 Day Course that incorporates completion of both a written and practical assessment and is suitable for both inexperienced and experienced operators.

The $81.00 fee for the processing of your National Photo Licence is to be paid to Australia Post on top of the course cost and must be paid within 60 days of the course completion date. On completion of the course you will receive an Interim Certificate to take to the Post Office with a Passport Photo. You will be able to drive a Forklift on the Interim Certificate for 60 days until you receive your National Photo Licence.

First Attack Fire Fighting  is a practical session where participants learn to correctly use fire fighting equipment including extinguishers, fire blankets and where available, a fire hose reel to extinguish a live fire.

This session provides the skills and knowledge required to give participants the confidence to take quick decisive action and effectively apply the correct extinguishing medium when faced with suppressing fires in the workplace.

Trainers have first-hand operational front line emergency management experience and expertise, managing real world emergencies on a day to day basis.

Australian Standard AS3745 states that emergency training should be conducted at intervals not exceeding six months.
