The Standard Mental Health First Aid course developed by Mental Health First Aid MHFA teaches participants how to provide initial support to another adult who may be experiencing a mental health problem or mental health crisis, until professional help is received or the crisis resolves. 

Course participants learn about the signs and symptoms of common mental health problems in adults, how to recognise and respond to an emerging or worsening mental health problem and the treatments and supports available. Using a practical, evidence-based action plan, course participants learn how to approach someone they are concerned about and initiate a conversation about those concerns. Participants also learn how to offer initial support and information and how to encourage the person to seek professional help or other supports.

Adults who complete the course become Mental Health First Aiders, equipped with the knowledge, confidence, and skills to provide someone with mental health information and support when it matters most.

This course is recognised by Suicide Prevention Australia as a safe, high-quality, and effective suicide prevention program.

Covid-19 Information 

IOH recognise the importance of social distancing during the current outbreak and we have assessed our face-to-face training for safety critical work. Due to the expected “extended response time” we have determined that the risk to participants is minor compared to risk to worker safety in not receiving this critical training in the most effective face-to-face manner. Our risk assessment considers that for most of the population the risk of severe symptoms is low if infected; however, there is a recognised “at-risk” population for more severe symptoms. If you have any concerns please feel free to contact us.

Our infection control policies continue to be in place to protect cross-infection; however, due to the risk to “at-risk” community, and burden all communicable disease can add to the health system IOH has implemented a strict no communicable disease policy for all our sites. Our staff with any cold or flu symptoms are required to work from home. We therefore apologise that a course may need to be cancelled, including at late notice, if the trainer becomes unavailable due to even mild illness. We also ask that any participant experiencing any symptom of cold or flu (or have close contacts who are exhibiting symptoms), or are requiring quarantine in relation to Covid-19, please contact our training team on 02 4210 7222 to discuss your course.

We now offer a mentoring service to help Return To Work Coordinators and Occupational Health and Safety Officers – by phone or on-site. Our experience and expertise gained from working in these areas since 1984 can be used to assist you in your job and provides valuable on-the-job and updated training for you at the same time, better equipping you to deal with issues in the future.

IOH hosts Return to Work Coordinators/WHS Professionals Interest Groups that provide an excellent networking opportunity for anyone involved in managing injuries or health and safety to share information and seek valuable advice from each other and guest speakers, in a friendly and welcoming environment.

The purpose of the group is to keep people up to date with changes in legislation and leading practices to foster continual improvement and to provide a forum where people can seek assistance in managing difficult situations and claims.

The meetings provide a forum for guest speakers to present information on relevant topics that cover a range of areas helpful to RTW Coordinators and WHS Professionals. In the past guest speakers have included psychologists, occupational therapists, insurers, WorkCover inspectors, protective equipment specialists, solicitors and many others.

Interest groups are held in Campbelltown, Parramatta, Penrith and Wollongong. Please join our mailing list to receive future invitations.

If you have lost your Certificate you can request for it to be reissued by calling the IOH Office you booked your training through. Our Training Administration staff will be happy to assist you.

Please note that a reissue fee of $25 per certificate applies.

Replacements can take 5 – 15 working days to arrive. 

If you are undertaking any nationally recognised training you will need to have a USI from 1st January 2015. The USI is a file number that will link your person details and your vocational education & training (VET) records. Details of all VET courses that you complete will be collated and held in a national registry.

It is free and easy for you to create your own USI online.

Under the legislation training organisations can only issue certification when they have received your USI. 

Managers and Supervisors are increasingly being required to confidently handle interpersonal issues in the course of their daily work. 

This Workplace Bullying and Harassment training covers strategies to identify, prevent and address bullying and harassment situations in order to improve workplace culture and relationships. It is delivered by a registered Psychologist with over 20 years of experience.

Legislation requires workers within the construction industry to complete the “NSW Prepare to Work Safely in the Construction Industry” (CPCCWHS1001) training course. This Nationally Recognised training provides new workers with details of their role and responsibilities in ensuring their own and other’s safety at work whilst working on construction sites.

Public Course Dates

Suitable for both initial and refresher training, participants are awarded a Nationally Accredited Statement of Attainment RIIWHS204E and where possible the course is tailored by the trainer to meet the individual needs of participants.

Based on the requirements of the Regulations, Codes of Practice and National Standards applicable, the Work Safely at Heights course addresses the requirements for all persons working at height. The three working systems – Fall Restraint, Fall Arrest and Work Position are covered in detail, with practical application of the skills practiced and assessed throughout the course.

Legislation states that where there is a risk of harm whilst working at heights, training should be provided to prevent injury – this training does not have to be the national unit of competency.
If the measures taken to prevent injury whilst working at heights include the use of a harness, the training provided should be the national unit of competency. Therefore if personnel are required to use a harness to work at heights, they need to have achieved competency in the national unit.
