The WHS Legislation for Officers session is specifically tailored to inform Officers of their legal responsibilities under the Work Health and Safety (WHS) Act 2011. Resilience in the Face of Stress is an interactive workshop that outlines the physical, psychological and behavioral indicators of stress, common causes of stress and effective ways of dealing with stress both at home and work.

The workshop is delivered by a registered Psychologist with over 20 years of experience and explores the concept of resilience, the capacity to confidently face the challenges of life without stress reactions taking an unnecessary toll on us.

Participants will be introduced to a range of exercises which have been proven to moderate the impact of stress. There will be an opportunity to develop a Personal Resilience Plan, so that participants can consciously foster activities and attitudes which build resilience in every day life.

HLTAID011 Provide first aid supersedes HLTAID003.  Also known previously as both Senior First Aid and then Apply First Aid (HLTFA311A), this 1 day course is suitable for workplace first aid officers or anyone who wishes to gain valuable skills to deal with emergencies and preserve life. This course focuses on practical skills and ensuring the student gains confidence to help others in an emergency.

HLTAID009 supersedes HLTAID001.  Previously also known as Perform CPR (HLTCPR211A), is designed to teach Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) in accordance with the Australian Resuscitation Guidelines and assess that the attendee has sufficient confidence to know when and how CPR should be applied.

The HLTAID010 Provide basic emergency life support course is nationally recognised and accepted by NSW Department of Education & Training (DET). Course Outline

USI

When enrolling in a Nationally Recognised training course you will need to obtain and provide your Unique Student Identifier (USI) Number. Certificates cannot be issued until the USI number has been provided.

This course covers the skills and knowledge required to provide a first aid response to infants, children and adults for educators and support staff working within an education and care setting who are required to respond to a first aid emergency, including asthmatic and anaphylactic emergencies.

This unit of competency has been approved by ACECQA.

A refresher course is recommended every three years. The Australian Resuscitation Council recommends that CPR is renewed every 12 months.

Course Outline

Participants will be required to demonstrate the following tasks at least once in line with state/territory regulations, first aid codes of practice, first aid requirements for services under the Education and Care Services National Law, ARC guidelines and workplace procedures.

Participants will be required to perform at least four minutes of uninterrupted CPR on an infant, a child and an adult resuscitation manikin placed on the floor, demonstrating the following techniques on each:

• checking for response and normal breathing
• recognising abnormal breathing
• opening and clearing the airway
• using correct hand location, compression depth rate in line with the ARC recommended ratio of compressions and ventilations
• acting in the event of regurgitation or vomiting
• following single rescuer procedure, including the demonstration of a rotation of operators with minimal interruptions to compressions
• following prompts of an Automated External Defibrillator (AED)

Participants must also be able to conduct a secondary assessment looking for other injuries/illnesses that may be evident.

Training will cover applied first aid procedures for the following:

• respiratory distress, allergic reaction, anaphylaxis, asthma
• basic wound care, severe bleeding/bleeding control
• burns, cardiac arrest, choking and airway obstruction
• convulsions, including febrile convulsions, epilepsy and seizures
• envenomation (using pressure immobilisation)
• soft tissue injuries, dislocations, fractures, sprains and strains (using arm slings, roller bandages or other appropriate immobilisation techniques)
• head, neck and spinal injuries
• poisoning and toxic substances
• unconsciousness, abnormal breathing or not breathing
• shock, diabetes, drowning
• abdominal injuries, crush injuries
• environmental impact (including hypothermia, hyperthermia, dehydration and heat stroke)
• eye and ear injuries, minor skin injuries, needle stick injuries

Participants must demonstrate they can follow workplace procedures for reporting details of the incident, including:

• providing an accurate verbal report of the incident
• completing an incident, injury, trauma and illness record
• responding to at several simulated first aid scenarios contextualised to the candidate’s workplace/community setting, and involving infants and children of varying ages.

Topics also covered include:

Legal, workplace and community considerations, such as:

• stress-management techniques and available support following an emergency situation, including the psychological impact on children
• duty of care requirements
• respectful behaviour towards a casualty
• own skills and limitations
• consent, including requirements for parental/caregiver consent
• privacy and confidentiality requirements
• importance of debriefing

Considerations when providing first aid including:

• airway obstruction due to body position
• appropriate duration and cessation of CPR
• appropriate use of an AED, including placement of pads for adults and children aged older than 8 years
• specific considerations when using an AED on children aged between 1 and 8 years, including identification of AED with paediatric capability, paediatric voltage and use of paediatric pads
• chain of survival
• standard precautions and infection control principles

This flexible learning approach allows the student to complete the pre-course theory component at their own pace prior to attending the practical face to face day which focuses on learning and practicing first aid skills such as CPR, administration of auto injectors (EpiPens & AnaPens), choking treatments, use of defibrillator and bandaging. A variety of assessment tasks are undertaken including 65 multiple choice & 9 short answer questions, 12 performance tasks & several simulated workplace scenarios.

The Preventing Psychological Injury at Work training session assists Managers and Supervisors to identify signs and understand appropriate actions they can take to effectively manage and improve psychological wellbeing in the workplace.
