Pre-employment medical assessments or pre-placement medical assessments are an important tool when assessing if a potential new worker may have a higher risk in performing the requirements of the job safely and effectively. They also form an important baseline for your workers, ensuring any future health concerns can be reviewed against the workers pre-employment health status.
An employer may also find it advisable to implement periodic medical assessments to monitor health and risk of your workforce and implement a clear Exit Medical process to document the health status of the employee at cessation of employment.
One of the most critical medical assessments is the Pre-Employment or Pre-placement medical. This is not only useful for new workers, but if there is a substantial change in the workers role or location. This medical forms a baseline that can then be used in all future health reviews to assess changes in health of your worker.
Some statutory legislated health schemes require regular monitoring or surveillance of worker health. If you don’t fall into this category it does not mean you cannot help protect your workforce by implementing your own periodical reviews. These can be comprehensive or specific and provide feedback on whether your health and safety management system are being effective.Â
An exit health assessment documents the health status of an individual at the time of exiting employment.
Some legislated health assessment schemes have built in exit assessments. Whether this is the case or not exit medicals can be an important part of your risk management program and provide evidence on the health status of the employee at the time they leave the organisation. This can assist if any future health concerns are raised by the employee.
